The Dothan Landfill Is Closed: Where Your Debris Actually Goes Now

If you are planning a cleanout, a roof tear-off, or a demolition in Dothan and your plan is “load the truck and run it to the city landfill,” that plan no longer works.

The City of Dothan states it plainly on its own Landfill page: “The City of Dothan Sanitary Landfill is closed.”

Here is where waste from a Dothan job actually goes right now, what each site takes, what it costs, and when renting a container is cheaper than the drive.

The five disposal sites the City itself points to

These are the alternative facilities listed on the City of Dothan’s Landfill page. Call before you load — hours, accepted materials, and tipping fees change, and none of these are city-operated.

Note what that list actually means for a Dothan job: only one of the five — Omussee, on Kinsey Road — is inside Dothan. The rest are in Midland City, Elba, or across the state line in Florida. Coffee County Landfill in Elba is roughly an hour each way from most Dothan addresses.

What it costs when the landfill reopens

The City’s page also sets out the rate structure for when the landfill is back in service: City Environmental Services customers may use it at no charge, while commercial customers and non-city residents are charged a minimum of $45.09 per ton.

Two things follow from that.

First, “a minimum of $45.09 per ton” is a floor, not a price. Heavy loads — shingles, concrete, dirt, plaster, wet debris — settle above the minimum, not at it. If you have never weighed a load of tear-off shingles, the number is usually much higher than people guess; a single square of asphalt shingles runs roughly 230-250 pounds, and three layers of tear-off on an average Dothan ranch can put you well past two tons on its own.

Second, if you live outside the city limits — Houston County unincorporated, Rehobeth, Taylor, Webb — the no-charge tier does not apply to you even when the landfill reopens.

What none of them will take

The City is explicit: “No hazardous materials such as oils, paints and lacquers, household and pool chemicals or pesticides/herbicides will be accepted.”

That list covers a surprising amount of what comes out of a garage or a storage building during a cleanout:

  • Half-used cans of paint, stain, thinner, and lacquer
  • Motor oil, transmission fluid, and old gas cans
  • Pool chlorine, shock, and muriatic acid
  • Weed killer, insecticide, and fertilizer concentrate
  • Car batteries and propane cylinders

These cannot go in a roll-off container either. Set them aside before the container arrives — not after it is half full and they are buried at the bottom. Separately, Alabama’s whole-tire landfill restrictions mean tires need their own disposal route as well.

C&D versus municipal waste — pick the right gate

Omussee is a C&D landfill — construction and demolition. That is the right destination for lumber, drywall, shingles, siding, cabinetry, flooring, and brick. It is not a general household-garbage facility.

Showing up at a C&D gate with a mixed load — furniture, food waste, bagged household trash on top of demo debris — is how a truck gets turned away after an hour in line. Mixed loads are also where surcharges come from. Keep demo debris and household junk in separate loads, or in separate containers.

The real math: hauling it yourself vs. a container

With the city landfill closed, self-hauling means a round trip to Kinsey Road at best, and to Elba or Campbellton at worst. Run the numbers honestly before you decide:

  • Trips. A half-ton pickup carries roughly one cubic yard of construction debris safely. A 20-yard container is about 20 of those loads. A kitchen gut is not a two-trip job.
  • Fuel and hours. Elba and back is close to two hours of driving before you queue at the scale.
  • Tipping fees. You pay them per load either way — and per-load minimums punish small loads.
  • Your truck. Shingles, concrete, and wet debris are what bend leaf springs and shred tires.
  • The gate. Private facilities set their own hours and can close a gate early. A container sits in your driveway on your schedule.

For most jobs bigger than a garage clear-out, a roll-off dumpster rental in Dothan ends up cheaper than the fuel, the fees, and the weekend — and the disposal is handled for you rather than being your problem at the scale house.

Matching the container to the job

Outside the city? We also serve Houston County, Midland City, Headland, and Ozark.

Before you start any Dothan cleanout

  1. Call the facility you plan to use and confirm it is open and taking your material type.
  2. Separate hazardous items — paint, oil, chemicals, pesticides, batteries, propane — before anything else is loaded.
  3. Keep C&D debris and household junk in separate piles.
  4. Estimate weight, not just volume, on any roofing, concrete, or dirt job.
  5. Decide honestly how many pickup trips the job really is.

Not sure which size you need or whether your material is allowed? Call (334) 453-7676 and describe the job — we will tell you the size and what has to stay out of the box.

Landfill status, hours, accepted materials, and tipping fees are set by each facility and by the City of Dothan, and can change without notice. Confirm current details directly with the facility before hauling.
